The World Hand Hygiene Day (also known as International Hand Hygiene Day, or World Hand Hygiene Day) is a global initiative that takes place every year on May 5 draws attention to the immense importance of hand hygiene for infection prevention.

Origin & Destination

• Symbolism: The date 5.5. is symbolic of the five fingers of each hand.
• Background: The day of action was established in 2009 by the World Health Organization (WHO) as part of the campaign SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands It was launched to raise awareness of infection prevention and patient safety. In Germany, it is primarily promoted through the campaign Clean Hands Campaign supports.
• Goal: Raising awareness among medical staff, patients, and visitors. The focus is on increasing compliance (adherence to rules) regarding hand hygiene.

• Facilities: The day of action is used in particular by institutions in the healthcare, nursing and education sectors to refresh hygiene knowledge and promote professional exchange.
• Activities: Information booths, interactive visual materials and practical training help to clearly convey the importance of hand hygiene and strengthen the motivation to implement it.
