Which method is worthwhile?
UV vs. DesiCoach in the cost check
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) recommends annual practical training in hand disinfection for all employees. But which method is more economically viable: the traditional UV method or the innovative DesiCoach® system?
Let’s take a closer look at both systems:
The classic method:
The UV method under the microscope
Many people are familiar with it: hygiene checks using fluorescent agents and a UV lamp. The hands are rubbed with the disinfectant and held under a black light, revealing weak spots in the disinfection process. It's an established procedure, no question. But how effective is it when it comes to training entire teams?
- The material costs: The cost of materials per person is approximately €0.27. For a typical group of 20 people, for example, during the annual hygiene training, this amounts to €5.40. (We assume that a UV box is already available in the company, always ready for use, and never incurs any costs for purchase or replacement – the ideal scenario, so to speak.)
- The key point is time: In a typical training group of 20 people, each person has to use the UV box one-on-one. Everyone else has to wait. If all 20 people are to train, as prescribed by the RKI, the time required adds up extremely quickly: our analysis shows a time requirement of approximately 15 minutes for the entire group, just for this one check. Valuable minutes while the rest of the team waits.
The innovative alternative:
The DesiCoach method
DesiCoach® takes a different approach. Instead of 1:1 support, the system enables several people at the same time to train under central supervision. The result? A drastic time saving.
- The material costs: The cost here is €2.00 per person, so €40.00 for our example group.
- Turbo training: The same group of 20 people with DesiCoach only needs about 5 minutes for two practice applications. Not only is that 10 minutes less than with the UV method, but it also offers twice the opportunities to optimize your own hygiene technique!

* Acquisition costs for the UV method are not taken into account here.
Difference in time spent → The UV method requires 10 minutes more time.
Difference in material costs → DesiCoach® is per training unit 34,60 € more expensive.
How valuable is your team’s time?
Considering only the material costs, the UV method seems cheaper – at least if you already own a UV lamp. But that's only part of the truth.
The Time savings of 10 minutes per training with DesiCoach® means for a group of 20 people a Total saving of 200 minutes – that’s 3.33 hours of work!
Anyone who simply claims that staff costs the same amount anyway – regardless of what they are doing – is overlooking two crucial points:
- Freed-up time can be spent on value-adding activities
- Overtime is an important cost factor and places additional strain on staff
So when does the balance between time expenditure and material costs tip?
For this we have to consider the hourly wage: If we divide the additional costs for DesiCoach® (34.60 €) by the saved working hours (3.33 hours), we get 10.39 € per hourIf your team earns more than that on average, the time factor becomes crucial.
Result → Does your team earn on average more than 10,39 € per hour? Then DesiCoach® is the most cost-effective method!
